A ZenBusiness Alternative That Never Reprices

The ZenBusiness figures are a different matter. They come from that company's own advertised rates as we confirmed them in July 2026, and you can check them yourself in about two minutes.

The Dashboard Is the Real Product

ZenBusiness ships the most polished interface in this corner of the market, and opening with anything else would cost this page its credibility. The console pulls formation paperwork, filing status, and incoming agent mail into one view, and it behaves like something a designer worked on rather than something a committee assembled. An owner who wants a business administration hub with the agent role occupying one tile inside it is buying a coherent product. That is a defensible purchase and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Two Numbers Attached to One Duty

Bought alone, with no formation order underneath it, ZenBusiness prices the agent role at $99 plus state fees to begin. Every renewal thereafter is $199 annually. Both figures are advertised openly and neither is deceptive. The second one simply describes your company's life, because an Illinois LLC keeps a registered agent for every year it stays on the state's rolls, not for one calendar year.

Notice what the extra hundred dollars buys in year two: nothing new. The statutory obligation is that a qualified person or company stands at an Illinois street address during business hours and accepts a summons on your behalf. That obligation in year seven matches the obligation in year one, exactly. A price that climbs on a schedule is following a calendar rather than a workload.

That trailing qualifier deserves a sentence of its own. "Plus state fees" means the first invoice cannot be read off the pricing page, since the total moves with whichever filings ride along on the order.

The annual gap is $100, which happens to be the exact sum Illinois charges an LLC whose annual report runs 60 days past due. One of those hundred-dollar amounts punishes a missed deadline. The other is a subscription doing the same thing it did last year.

Switching From ZenBusiness in Illinois: The $25 Statement

Illinois moves an agent with one document, Form LLC-1.36/1.37, the short statement that updates a registered agent, a registered office, or both together. The filing fee is $25. It is processed by the Limited Liability Division, the arm of Business Services that keeps LLC records for the Illinois Secretary of State. The two numbers in the form's designation mark two different situations: 1-36 when a company installs a different agent, 1-37 when an agent revises the address on its own file. Yours is the first.

Two Illinois rules shape who can go on the form. Under 805 ILCS 180/1-35, the incoming agent has to be either an individual living in Illinois or a company that holds its own registration here and is cleared to do business in the state, and the registered office must be an Illinois address kept up continuously and identical to that agent's own place of business. A box at a post office does not qualify by itself, and the statute does not let your LLC take the appointment for itself.

Order matters more here than in most states. The form has a line for the incoming agent, so it cannot be filed as a bare resignation with the replacement sorted out afterward. That is fortunate, because Illinois adds a $100 penalty when the agent's chair goes empty and the company does not fill it within 60 days of the outgoing agent's notice. Hire the new agent, write that name and address onto the statement, send the $25, and confirm the state record before you cancel with ZenBusiness. Done in that sequence there is never a day when your listing shows no agent, and the penalty has nothing to attach itself to.
