When You Need an Illinois Agent and Not a Legal Subscription

Give Them Credit for the Price Structure

Their agent service is $125 a year, and it stays $125 whether you sit at the lowest membership level or the highest. No introductory rate that lapses. No second-year escalation. In a category where a discounted first term is close to the default, one number holding across every tier is a small act of clarity, and it belongs before any criticism.

The Question Is Scope

Rocket Lawyer's core business is a legal services platform. Document templates, electronic signature, attorney consultations, a subscription built to be opened regularly. The agent role is a component of that offering rather than the offering itself.

Which produces two very different buyers.

The first uses the platform. Contracts get drafted, questions get asked, executed documents get filed away. For this buyer the agent line is a convenience inside a tool already earning its keep, and $125 is fine.

The second wants an Illinois address that accepts a summons and a company that says so the moment one lands. For this buyer the templates are a library with an unbroken spine, and part of the $125 is rent on shelf space.

Twenty-six dollars a year is a modest spread and we are not going to inflate it. Notice what it happens to equal, though. Illinois charges $25 to change your registered agent. One year of the difference between these two prices covers the entire cost of leaving whichever one you choose.

Illinois Grades Agents on Very Little

The state's specification is short. Somebody has to hold the registered office in Illinois without interruption, that office must be the agent's own business address rather than a mail drop, and papers delivered there count as delivered to your company. Nothing in the requirement mentions software, templates, or membership levels.

Where Illinois does get demanding is the calendar, which is set out at 805 ILCS 180/50-1. Your LLC owes an annual report before the first of its anniversary month, every year, at $75 on Form LLC-50.1. Two details catch people out. The online system accepts only LLCs with eight members or fewer, so a larger roster, a signature executed under power of attorney, or a reinstatement all force the paper form and the mailbox. And the penalty schedule is unforgiving: $100 added at 60 days past due, with the state beginning to unwind the company at 180 days delinquent.

An agent tracking that date is worth more to an Illinois LLC than an agent bundled with contract templates. That is a claim about fit, not about quality.

What $99 Covers

Replacing Rocket Lawyer as Your Illinois Registered Agent

Illinois does this with Form LLC-1.36/1.37 and a $25 fee. Business Services at the Illinois Secretary of State handles it through the Limited Liability Division, and the official form is a short PDF you can download and complete by hand. The pair of numbers in its title splits by situation: 1-36 for a company appointing a different agent, 1-37 for an agent correcting the address on its own record.

Enter your company name, the outgoing agent with its registered office, and the incoming agent with its registered office. Send it along with the $25. Check the state's business record after processing, which normally takes several business days, and confirm the new name is showing before you touch anything else.

Then, and only then, deal with the membership. This is where appointment order matters. Illinois will assess a $100 penalty against an LLC that lets the agent chair sit empty for 60 days following a resigning agent's notice, and the surest way to manufacture that vacancy is to cancel your existing arrangement before the replacement is on file. A normal switch never triggers it, because the form names the incoming agent in the same breath that it releases the old one. Just keep the order. Your Rocket Lawyer subscription, if the templates are worth keeping, is a separate decision on your own timetable.
